Anthem is a dystopian science fiction novella by Ayn Rand. Mankind has entered a new dark age as a result of the evils of irrationality and collectivism and the weaknesses of socialistic thinking and economics. Individuality and ambition have become sins. Technological advancement is now carefully planned (when it is allowed to occur at all). Here is the story of one man willing to risk everything to rebel against a society that refuses to believe in the power or rights of the individual.

I frequently wonder if all the reviewers hating Rand's later novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, have read Anthem instead. Most of the usual complaints heaped upon those books certainly do apply here - a formulaic, predictable plot, cardboard characters and an overall implausible dystopian setting. There isn't much to speak for the text on its own, the dark-collectivist dystopia theme has certainly been explored better by other books, including Rand's own.Undoubtedly, fans of Rand's work and thought wishing to explorer her earliest writings can enjoy Anthem, but the chances of the book appealing - either intellectually or artistically - to new readers are slim indeed. Readers interested in exploring Rand's work are well advised to start with her more mature books.

Anthem edition by Ayn Rand Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Freedom is understandable by kids. Grownups take a little longer to get it out but either you understand the nature of it or you don't. If you don't, read this and call me in the morning.
This novella was very difficult to read because of the pronouns used (we, our) in place of "I". However, it had an interesting storyline. Certainly thought provoking.
This book definitely is thought provoking, to say the least. It was shorter than I expected but very powerful nonetheless. I chose to read it because it's one of my boyfriend's favorites and I was curious as to what it was. While it wasn't exactly the type of book I generally choose to read, I still enjoyed the writing style and the questions posed.
Unlike other dystopian novels, this books lacks key details that could have made it much more entertaining and persuasive. Overly organized societies have been done in many short stories and novels, along with language-controlled societies elements, but this novel did nothing to add to the concept, but rather showed less credible motivation on the part of the powers-that-be to create such a structured and spiritually deprived world. This was my first Rand novel and I understand it's meant to be accessible to a younger audience, but The Giver is much more effective without resorting to a one-dimensional depiction of individuality and communitarianism.
Anthem is the story of a man, Equality 7-2521, born into a dark grey world where the collective makes every decision for every individual for their entire life. Eventually he realizes there is more to life and he wants to pursue his passion and improve the world. Unfortunately, the world is not amused. Anthem is a great place to start with Ayn Rand and before you dive into Atlas Shrugged. Written as a novella it reads more like a poem, and it takes just a couple of hours to finish. Should be required reading for every high school student.
At some time civilization has lost its ability to think freely. They have become a collective. Their lives are predetermined.
This book is about the rediscovery of freedom from this collective.
Short book but has many great quotes.
I've read an article about Bioshock (a video game) months ago. Three books of Ayn Rand mentioned there that inspired Ken Levin. Anthem, Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead.
Anthem is the first book of Ayn Rand I've read and I really liked it. A short dystopia with interesting ideas. I'm just going to give you a taste of the book
" What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree, and to obey? "
